Tether’s USDT Affected by ‘Panic Buying’ of Chinese Stocks: Report

USDT, the stablecoin issued by Tether, is reportedly experiencing the impacts of Chinese investors suddenly returning to their nation’s stock market. According to a new report by Bloomberg, USDT has at times traded below the value of the US dollar since the end of September. Stablecoins are usually pegged to the dollar or other assets at a 1:1 ratio. According to Dessislava Aubert, a senior research analyst at blockchain data firm Kaiko, the stablecoin discount coincided with China’s central bank implementing several easing measures in an effort to alleviate a worsening economic outlook that sent stocks surging upward. Says Livio Weng, chief executive officer of Hong Kong-based crypto exchange Hashkey, “If the traders are rushing to exchange back into fiat currency, it can be inferred that they are panic buying Chinese stocks.” Aubert suggests the slight USDT discount is indicative of a higher demand for dollars than the stablecoin. Polygon Labs denies dumping MATIC on Binance

Image
In a Sept. 6 post on X, Lookonchain pointed out that Polygon Foundation had transferred millions of dollars worth of MATIC, their native token, to Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange. Such transfers are often interpreted as bearish. However, Sandeep Nailwal, the founder of Polygon Labs, has since denied this claim saying it was a case of mislabeling. The blockchain analytics tool, Lookonchain, flagged two addresses, “Polygon Foundation: 0x8d36” and “Polygon Foundation: 0xf957,” which had collectively moved $5.5 million worth of MATIC to Binance in a month. Of this, more than half was allegedly deposited on the exchange in the last two days. Is Polygon Foundation selling $MATIC? We noticed that "Polygon Foundation: 0x8d36" deposited 6M $MATIC ($3.35M) to #Binance in the past 2 days. Binance wants SEC chair Gary Gensler recused for ‘advising’ the crypto exchange

Court filings by crypto exchange Binance claim that Securities and Exchange Commission ( SEC ) chair Gary Gensler approached the firm in 2019 and served as an “informal advisor,” and therefore should be recused in the SEC ’s lawsuit. In 2019, Gensler wasn’t yet the SEC chair but taught at MIT. According to a letter from Binance’s counsel, he sat down for lunch in March of that year with chief Changpeng Zhao (CZ) in Japan. During this meeting, the firm claims the pair discussed Binance opening an exchange in the US. The letter claims that Gensler offered to serve as an informal advisor during this meeting. “Mr. Gensler should have been recused from any consideration in this matter based on this history and the prospect that Mr. Gensler may be a material fact witness,” Binance’s counsel wrote. “To date, the Staff has never confirmed whether Mr. Gensler has recused himself.” The letter further claimed that Gensler gave CZ a sneak peek of his planned testimony before t...

Maybe Bitcoin didn’t bottom? SEC lawsuit against Binance shakes BTC bulls’ confidence

Image
Bitcoin’s price dropped to $25,500 after the SEC announced a lawsuit against Binance and Changpeng Zhao, a move which also has BTC bulls wondering if the bottom is truly in. Bitcoin’s price declined 5% in one hour on June 5 after the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit against Binance on allegations of violating federal securities laws. Even though the $25,500 support held for Bitcoin, investors are still digesting the potential impacts of the regulatory action, which also involves Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao. According to digital asset investment firm Arca CEO Jeff Dorman, the direct impact of an eventual shutdown of Binance operations in the U.S. is irrelevant. Furthermore, non-criminal charges from the past should not destabilize Binance’s present international structures. Still, Arca’s CEO expects negative market sentiment to prevail as the crypto community cheers for CZ and Binance. My 2 sats on SEC vs Binance Mostly irrelevant since no o...
