Bitcoin Mining is a Weapon for Modern Wars: U.S. Space Force Major

According to a recent MIT master’s thesis by a U.S. Space Force major, Bitcoin (BTC) is more than just an online payment method. Instead, the paper mentioned that the Pentagon should use it as a weapon in modern conflicts. According to Major Jason Lowery, the proof-of-work (PoW) consensus protocol used by BTC represents a significant change in the potential for global warfare. Instead of having soldiers on the ground and missiles in the air, countries can battle each other for block rewards. Lowery is a U.S. National Defense Fellow at MIT. He is also an astronautical engineer on active duty with the U.S. Space Force. According to the biography of his most recent book, his responsibility is to counsel top military people on the ramifications of Bitcoin. In some aspects, Lowery compares the role of PoW competitors, to that of a game of chess and the Olympics during the Cold War. It involves a sort of rivalry that is less violent than a shooting match. The victor in PoW competitions ac

Crypto Didn't Play a Direct Role in Bank Failures: U.S. Treasury Official

In early March, a couple of major U.S. Banks were on the verge of collapse. However, the federal government along with other prominent financial institutions stepped in and took decisive actions. Testifying during a hearing of the House Financial Services Committee recently, Nellie Liang, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Undersecretary for Domestic Finance asserted that the American economy relies on a “healthy and diverse” banking system. Liang said that the Treasury continues to “closely monitor” developments across the banking and financial system. Parallelly, it is coordinating with federal and state regulators as well. Opining on the current state of affairs, she said, “We think the system has stabilized. We have information and evidence that deposits have stabilized.” Liang added that the regulators will need to address reforms going forward to cater to the concerns about moral hazard. Top Analyst Says Banks Get Too Big For Depositors To Escape

Balaji Srinivasan, who used to be the chief technology officer of Coinbase, thinks that Bitcoin (BTC) is a way for US citizens to leave the money system and get away from government control. In a new interview with Bitcoin bull Anthony Pompliano, Srinivasan says that the Federal Reserve’s plan to start its new digital payment and settlement service, FedNow, in July worries him in particular. The service is called a central bank digital currency by the former CTO of Coinbase (CBDC). Srinivasan says that FedNow could give the government more power over how people spend their money. “It’s really going to be one of two things. First, there are all kinds of chaotic printing and bank runs in the weeks to come, as worried depositors check on their funds, and the big branch point is whether they wire it to big banks or they turn it into Bitcoin. And that determines literally whether freedom lives, as funny as that sounds. Because if everybody wires to big banks, and t

Bitcoin's Liquidity Drops Down to 10-Month Low, Causes Volatility Spike

Image
Bitcoin (BTC), the original cryptocurrency, witnessed a spike in fund inflows after the banking crisis in the United States. However, investors are now facing a new set of problems: low liquidity and increased slippage. The market depth for Bitcoin (BTC) implies that liquidity is at a 10-month low. According to Kaiko, BTC’s liquidity is significantly lower than it was during the FTX meltdown in November. According to Kaiko, the market depth for BTC-USD and BTC-USDT is 5,600 BTC, or roughly $155 million. Kevin de Patoul, CEO of Keyrock, says that liquidity will remain a challenge in the short term. Furthermore, slippage for BTC trades has also increased. Slippage is a liquidity metric that quantifies how much a trade’s price changes from placement to execution. According to Kaiko, slippage for purchasing Bitcoin (BTC) using U.S. dollars on Coinbase is 2.5 times higher than it was at the beginning of March. In the last month, the slippage for a hypothetical $100,000 sell or
